In vitro fertilisation (IVF) with donor eggs is a fertility treatment in which eggs from a donor are used for fertility treatment using IVF or Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This technique is used when patients cannot use their eggs for various reasons, such as advanced age, diminished ovarian reserve, genetic disorders, or other medical conditions.
Fertility treatment with donor eggs begins with the selection of a suitable egg donor based on specific criteria, such as medical history, physical characteristics, and sometimes shared traits. The egg donor can be known or unknown to the recipient.
The egg donor has several screening tests after which, if suitable, she undergoes ovarian stimulation to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved from the ovaries through a minimally invasive procedure. These eggs are fertilised with sperm from either the recipient’s partner or donor sperm in the laboratory through either conventional IVF or ICSI.
The resulting embryos are cultured and monitored for quality and development in the laboratory. The best quality embryo/s is/are transferred into the recipient’s uterus through a gentle procedure. Any other embryos of suitable quality can be frozen and stored for future use. Afterwards, a pregnancy test is conducted to determine if the treatment has been successful.
