IVF/ICSI with Donor Eggs

What is IVF/CSI with Donor Eggs

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) with donor eggs is a fertility treatment in which eggs from a donor are used for fertility treatment using IVF or  Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This technique is used when patients cannot use their eggs for various reasons, such as advanced age, diminished ovarian reserve, genetic disorders, or other medical conditions.

How IVF/CSI with Donor Eggs work

Fertility treatment  with donor eggs  begins with the selection of a suitable egg donor based on specific criteria, such as medical history, physical characteristics, and sometimes shared traits. The egg donor can be known or unknown to the recipient.

The egg donor has several  screening tests after which, if suitable, she undergoes ovarian stimulation to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved from the ovaries through a minimally invasive procedure. These eggs are fertilised with sperm from either the recipient’s partner or  donor sperm in the laboratory through either conventional IVF or ICSI.

The resulting embryos are cultured and monitored for quality and development in the laboratory. The best quality embryo/s is/are transferred into the recipient’s uterus through a gentle procedure. Any other embryos of suitable quality can be frozen and stored for future use. Afterwards, a pregnancy test is conducted to determine if the treatment has been successful.

When you should consider IVF/CSI with Donor Eggs

IVF/ICSI with donor eggs is a fertility treatment option recommended for people who cannot use their eggs to conceive. This could be for the following reasons:

  • Their ovaries don’t produce eggs on their own. This can be related to age, early menopause, certain genetic conditions or after cytotoxic treatment (chemo/radiotherapy).
  • They do not have ovaries.
  • Their egg quality is poor.
  • They have a genetic condition that may be passed on to offspring.
